How to enable RDP on Windows Home
Windows Home does not have the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) server enabled by default. This is a quick guide on how to enable it.
Windows Home does not have the Remote Desktop Services (RDS) enabled by default. You can use the preinstalled Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) app to connect to other Windows Pro and Enterprise computers. However, you cannot use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to remotely connect to a PC running Windows 10/11 Home edition. But there is a workaround. This is a quick guide on how to enable it.

Connecting to the RDP serverโ
- In your personal computer press
Win + Rand typemstscto open the Remote Desktop Connection. You can also search forRemote Desktop Connectionin the start menu. - In the Remote Desktop Connection window, type the IP address of the Windows Home computer and click
Connect.tipTo find the IP address of the Windows Home computer, press
Win + Rand typecmd. In the command prompt, typeipconfigand pressEnter. The IP address of the Windows Home computer will be displayed underIPv4 Address. - Enter the username and password of the Windows Home computer and click
OK.
You don't need Windows Pro to connect to the RDP server. You can use any version of Windows to connect to the RDP server. It has always been that way.
What if a user cannot be logged in and shows error that it has insufficient rights?โ
Usually only administrators can log in through RDP. If you want to allow other users to log in through RDP, follow these steps:
- Log on as an administrator
- Click Start, then Run.
- Type secpol.msc and click OK
- Expand Local Policies, then click User Rights Assignment
- In the right pane, double-click Allow logon through Remote Desktop Services
- Make sure the Remote Desktop Users group is listed. If not, click Add User or Group and add it.
- Click OK
