How to extend a drive in Windows 10/11 for free using AOMEI Partition Assistant

Have you ever run out of space on a drive and needed to extend it? But Windows Disk Management doesn't allow you to extend the drive? Or maybe you shrunk a drive but since it is not adjacent to the drive you want to extend, you can't extend it? This is a quick guide on how to do it.


What is AOMEI Partition Assistant?

Shrinking a drive using AOMEI Partition Assistant

Shrinking a device means reducing the size of the drive. This is useful when you want to create a new partition or free up space for another drive.

  1. Download and install AOMEI Partition Assistant.
  2. Open AOMEI Partition Assistant.
  3. Right-click on the drive you want to shrink and select Resize/Move Partition.
  4. Drag the slider to the left to shrink the drive.
  5. Click OK.

Extending a drive using AOMEI Partition Assistant

  1. Download and install AOMEI Partition Assistant.
  2. Open AOMEI Partition Assistant.
  3. Right-click on the drive you want to extend and select Resize/Move Partition.
  4. Drag the slider to the right to extend the drive.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Apply on the top left corner.
  7. Click Proceed to confirm the operation.
  8. Wait for the operation to complete.

What if

If you are unable to extend the drive because the unallocated space is not adjacent to the drive you want to extend, you can use the Merge Partitions feature in AOMEI Partition Assistant to merge the unallocated space with the drive you want to extend.

Or you can use the Move Partition feature to move the unallocated space next to the drive you want to extend.
